How to Book Dinner for Eight People Without It Becoming a Project
Most restaurants don't want your table of eight. Here's how to get one anyway.

A table of two is a customer. A table of eight is an operational decision. Once you understand that, everything about booking group dinners makes more sense — including why nobody is answering your booking form.
The rules that actually work
- 1Email, don't use the online form. Forms often cap at six and route large parties to a bin
- 2Offer 7pm or 9.30pm. The 8pm slot is what everybody else wants and you won't win it
- 3Say the number, the date, and that you'll pre-order if it helps. That last line gets replies
- 4Accept the set menu. For eight people it's usually better food and a much calmer evening
- 5Confirm 48 hours before, and again on the day if it's a small place
The split-the-bill part
Tell the restaurant before you order whether you want one bill or separate ones. Asking for eight cards at the end of service is the single fastest way to be remembered badly. One card and a settle-up later is kinder to everyone, including you.
